Hey pals,
How about something different this week?
Or more like a return, however briefly, to what this newsletter used to be. It’s been a rainy summer here in New Orleans, at least when it isn’t scorching hot. It was so hot recently that I showed up dehydrated to an MRI appointment.
Humbled by an MRI
Apparently when you get an MRI of your hands, you need a dye IV so the doctor can see your tissue, tendons, and other innards clearly. But when you’re dehydrated, your veins shrink and it takes the nurses five tries to find a good one.
Not only are my arms bruised, but I didn’t know that I would have to strip down to my undies and curl up like a prehistoric finding, preserved in the fetal position for 5,000 years, with my hands in a foam block.
My bum was out. Talk about humbling.
Book pitch burnout
Making a picture book is also a humbling experience. I’ve been working on The Way Home for three or four months now but the bulk of the pitch, including some major story and layout changes, was made in June.
A month later, I’m feeling a little burnt out. But with only a week left to enter the Unpublished Showcase at the time of writing this, I couldn’t be more pleased with how the book dummy is turning out.
The Way Home is about homes of course but also belonging and that sometimes, home doesn’t look the way you expect it to. It’s certainly not what curious kitten Asher expects in this sample spread.
While I put the finishing touches on my samples, paid pals will get behind the scenes of making them in my next post. Subscribers and lurkers alike can join the paid pal club to unlock my secret newsletters before then.
