Reflecting on May
And here we are, mere days away from June! It doesn’t feel like it’s been a month since my last newsletter but the timestamp tells a different story. Since we’re halfway through the year already, let’s reflect on May and what I’m looking forward to in June.
Some things I’ve accomplished
Paid off my car! 🎉 I bought my car in 2018 when I was rolling in teaching money, or at least it felt like that at the time, and finally paid it off. It only took 5 1/2 years of forgetting my password and thanking God for autopay.
Started Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way… for the third time. It promises a spiritual path to higher creativity but it’s one hell of a dry read. It’s not Julia’s fault, my attention span is so short lately, but I’m powering through for the sake of my creative awakening. I’ll let you know when I’ve ascended.
Tried my hand at pottery! April was my last full month at the pottery studio. Work, life, and balancing the two kept me from using the studio as much as I wanted to, but I had fun handbuilding and experimenting with glazes. Now, I’m looking back on what I made — I’m especially proud of my goose ring holders.
Things I’m looking forward to
While more of a long term goal, I’m excited to explore my style, both creatively and how I present myself in the world. I’m learning about online thrifting, which feels like less of a waste of time as a plus size girl, and getting inspo from icons like Personal Bravery and Lydia Okello. I’m going to find the wide leg pants of my dreams.
A social media break! Part of exploring my style is figuring out how to stay connected without being so attached to my phone. (I would never do it, but I’m fascinated by people who don’t have socials. What do they do all day?)
Although I still have collections on my mind, I’m taking it one piece of cardstock at a time. I’ve been chipping away at a few ideas for future group shows and just trying to hang on through my art block — much like this cicada.

I haven’t started collaging at the time of writing this newsletter so I’m putting all my faith in my collage scissors that everything works out. If nothing else, cutting up bits of paper is great stress relief!
Until next time,
Jade
